Moscow

Take me back to the Main Index.

The GREAT things to see and do!

  • Red Square, & Lenin's Mausoleum, & St Basil's right in the very centre of Moscow, the most famous sights of the city.    St Basil's is actually more astounding from outside than inside - Napoleon  turned it into Stables.  Lenin is buried in Red Square - opening times are erratic but you can still visit if you are persistent.

  • The Kremlin and the Kremlin Cathedrals containing the Tombs of the Tsars.  Allow at least a full half-day to see the astounding beauty of the Cathedrals - most people will want to visit Archangel Michael Cathedral where the Tsars up to Peter I were buried - and the Assumption Cathedral where the Tsars were crowned.

  • The Kremlin Armoury Museum containing the Royal Robes, the Royal Crowns, the Private Treasures of the Tsars and the Fabergé Eggs.  You would probably need a second visit to the Kremlin to see this expensive ($10 admission) but world-famous collection.

  • Tretyakov Gallery of Russian Old Masters.  Probably the finest collection of paintings by Russian Artists in the world.  The collection is newly reopened after a ten-year refurbishment, and has been worth the wait!  Our favourites include Vasnetsov, Vrubel and Aivazovsky, and you will almost never see these works outside Russia.

  • Pushkin Museum of (mainly Western) Fine Art.  A fabulous collection of art which includes many fine French Impressionist works.

  • Kuskovo Palace and Gardens.  Once the home of the Scheremetyev Family, richer than the Tsars themselves.  Set in beautiful gardens adjoining the family's own private fish-ponds (!) the visit includes various grottos, pavilions and outhouses in addition to the Palace itself.

  • New Maiden Convent .  A unique ensemble of Churches within massive fortified walls which featured prominently in Russia's turbulent medieval history.

  • Kolomenskoye. A former Tsarist Country Estate from the C17th - an easy excursion on the Moscow Metro.

your secret weapon for getting the inside story....

Is Moscow Safe?
We think so, and we go there frequently.  Certainly, there is a little more crime than in the Soviet Era, but no more than you would find in other major world cities like London, New York, Milan, Rio de Janeiro - and other popular travel destinations.  If you DRESS DOWN you will almost certainly  be fine!  We have never had a passenger report any kind of attack in all the time we've offered these
