We have been promoting Russian Homestays for many years now, and continue to do so. The reasons we suggest this is a great way to experience Russia are:
You get to meet real Russian people, and share something of their lives.
It changes the nature of your trip from merely passive to active - you get to interact with the people who live in the places you are visiting.
The best of Russian Cooking is prepared at home - this isn't smart sales talk, it's the truth! (if we wanted to "hard-sell" you, we'd be pushing 4-5* hotels....). Enjoy the delicious local food our hosts prepare for you - a welcome change from burgers'n'fries at those famous "golden arches"....
Family Stays include breakfast and supper daily - excellent value when you remember that eating in Moscow or St Petersburg is more expensive than London!
Homestays - What to Expect
You will get your own room - the only person you will share it with is any co-passenger you have decided to travel with.
You share the bathroom with your hosts. Please note that Russian Plumbing can be a bit erratic - and often very unlovely in appearance!
Our hosts are not super-rich - they are average Russian Families. Their homes have regular "soviet" furniture and furnishings. Russian taste is often conservative, and dark, even drab colours may predominate; but these are typical of what the USSR made-available to its citizens.
Breakfast will usually be a hot meal - you could expect sausages, or eggs etc - with bread, jam etc.
Supper is also a hot, evening meal, and hosts can usually be flexible about what time it's served - within reason. (nb - the main meal in Russia is lunch - we serve you a main meal in the evening despite this).
House Rules!
- You cannot bring uninvited guests back to visit.
- Outdoor shoes and boots are banned - bring slippers.
- Late-night drunken returns are frowned-upon!
- Some family members have jobs to go to - please be considerate in this respect.
