Moscow

Take me back to the Main Index.

...and still more and more to see and do in & around Moscow.....

Day Trip to Sergiev-Posad Monastery
See what was once the heart of the Russian Church, exiled from Moscow in the Communist Era, in one of the few Monasteries to have kept working continuously throughout the Stalin era.  As you visit the ancient churches within the fortified walls, you also follow in the footsteps of Russian History, and hear the story of the Time of the Troubles, and see the grave of Boris Godunov......

Walk the Streets of Old Moscow

In amongst those towering buildings are narrow lanes,  Art Deco buildings.  Follow a Moscow Walking Route, either from a recommended Guide Book or with one of our Buddies
and find out about Blok, and why you should be careful not to slip in sunflower-oil near Patriarch's Ponds...

Boat Trips on the Moskva River

See Moscow from the water on a Moscow Riverboat!    Take the strain off your feet for a while,  and watch the massive panorama of Russia's greatest city sweep by in front of you.  Excellent value at just a few $-worth of roubles on this non-tourist regular city service.

Enjoy the Culture

Not only the world-famous Bolshoi Ballet - there's the Bolshoi Opera,  the Stanislavsky Theatre,  the Puppet Theatre, and much else that doesn't need a knowledge of Russian to enjoy.    And if you can manage a few words like "Allez-ooop!", you could try the famous Circus too - you have a choice of two circuses, in fact, the Old and the New (we prefer the Old one).  (nb most Russian Circus involves animal acts).

A Taste of the Unusual.....
Moscow's a slightly surreal city, so expect the unusual.....  the Fleamarket (weekends) at Izmailovsky park has everything for sale - souvenirs, handicrafts, car parts, old tyres, Red Army memorabilia......  visit a Market to see what's on sale - fruit and veg from Caucasian merchants, spices and rice from Central Asia, home-made honey and jam...... visit Arbat Street, the "bohemian" centre of Moscow (although the Authorities keep trying to clean-it up).....  try a Jazz'n'Blues Club...... the Heavy Metal Club that never closes (those still there at breakfast-time are asked to help clean-up the place)....  visit Vysotsky's Grave, the legendary singer banned by the Soviets yet memorised by everyone....
