Irkutsk & Lake Baikal

Lots of options to choose from!

Lake Baikal is the world’s largest lake – in length alone it’s as far as London to Edinburgh! And surrounding it completely in each direction is a huge National Park, making this Siberia’s largest National Park – with super opportunities for outdoor activities in both summer & winter.

As you might expect with a region which is larger than some European countries, there are huge differences between areas. The Listvyanka Village area is the closest part of Baikal to Irkutsk. For this reason it attracts the most visitors, and has geared itself up to their needs – with a asphalt road leading to it, a few small shops, a souvenir market, and even now a couple of bars.

Villages located further from the city are much more unchanged by time... they’re served by rural village roads, and except for rudimentary local shops for local people, there’s little concession made to even the C20th. If you’d like the authentic experience of an unchanged Siberian village, Bolshoe Goloustnoe is exactly what you’re looking for.

Bolshoe Goloustnoe

Old traditions are better preserved here than in Listvyanka – for those that want that! Three-night light hike (no camping) itinerary fits all T-Sib trips with a 3-nt Irkutsk stop, or add an extra night in Irkutsk to make a 4-nt module.
