From Moscow with its blend of Soviet-era influences, high culture and cutting edge nightlife to the great history and majestic treasures of St Petersburg, the itineraries can also take in the interesting charm of Novgorod.
The country’s oldest city, Novgorod assumes a distinct atmosphere in winter and festive celebrations include a medieval feast and displays of local dance and folklore accompanied by a healthy dose of partying Russian-style.
With Christmas in Russia not celebrated until early January, December sees all sights, shops and markets open for visitors and the Beetroot trips come in Christmas, New Year and a combination of the two options. Programmes vary depending on the trip, but highlights include walking tours of the cities, a medieval banquet, a New Year’s Eve dinner followed by midnight in Red Square, and assistance in obtaining tickets for the Kremlin in Moscow and the Hermitage Collection in St Petersburg.
Beetroot Backpackers is operated by The Russia Experience and brings together some of Russia’s culture, history and highlights combined with a good smattering of fun for a predominantly younger market travelling on a budget.
Prices start at £425 per person for the eight-night Christmas Cracker. The cost includes transfers, budget accommodation, the overnight train between Moscow and Novgorod, and a full sightseeing programme in these two destinations as well as in St Petersburg. A five-night New Year trip costs £350 and an eight-night combination of two is £525. All prices exclude flights and Russian visas.
