Short Halts

home

In addition to places worth stopping to see,  the train makes other stops,  but never longer than about 20 minutes,  to set-down and pick-up passengers, post, and supplies.  The only stop longer than this is at the Chinese border,  where the whole train has to be converted to the narrower Chinese rail gauge - they have to change all the bogeys,  by hand!

There are usually people selling stuff on the platforms where the train makes longer halts.  ABOVE you can see workers from a near-bankrupt factory trying to sell glassware - the factory is so broke,  they get paid in goods instead of wages,  and have to try to sell stuff.
BELOW,  the more usual selection of snacks;  hot pies, rolls, hard-boiled eggs, beer, some grotty fruit etc, but all very cheap.  Some enterprising people even sell whole hot bagged meals, average price is around US$1 or $2.

(the music's the theme tune from the kid's cartoon "Cheburashka", when little Cheburashka and his friend Crocodile Gena are setting off on another adventure on their Turquoise Train...)
