Comment on Sweeping generalisations #3: Father, friend and colleague by Tess https://www.trans-siberian.co.uk/blog/sweeping-generalisations-3/#comment-6743 Mon, 27 Jul 2015 01:30:32 +0000 https://trans-siberian.co.uk/blog/?p=4301#comment-6743 I am very sorry to be a patronising bore, but пожалуйста (please)’ in response to ‘thank you’ means ‘you are welcome’ ,NOT ‘don’t mention it’. Which is actually rather logical, because,in a way, saying ‘please’ in Russian when offering something means ‘you are welcome to have it/ you are welcome here etc’. And there are only two meanings of the word пожалуйста: ‘here, please accept it/you are welcome to have it’ and ‘ you are welcome’ (in response to ‘thank you’). I have never heard of ‘please’ being used with the meaning ‘don’t mention it”, it simply does not make any sense. And I am born and bred moscovite with a degree in Russian language.
And one more thing, the female version of the name Alexander is Alexandra, not Alexandria.
I love you blog .
